Although Stage channels make many types of events easier to run on Discord, it’s important to know how they differ from standard voice channels and when it’s better to use one over another. Stage channels and voice channels both provide a versatile set of tools and settings that allow you to customize your channels and events in a way that best suits your server.

Before discussing specific recommendations, you should understand the technical capabilities of both channel types. The following table compares the capabilities of Stage channels and voice channels:

As you can see, each channel type has its own distinct features. Keep in mind that this table isn’t an exhaustive list. We recommend that you take some time to get comfortable with how each channel type works before you add them to your server.

The biggest thing to consider regarding Stage channels is that they are intended- and optimized-for larger scale events potentially consisting of up to a thousand users. Voice channels are optimized for use in smaller, more intimate settings where a group of users can play a game together, video chat, or share videos with one another. This information alone may be enough to help you decide which channel type to use, but here are a couple of scenarios to consider:

  • If you plan to rely on sharing video in the channel for the event you will have to use voice channels as Stage channels don’t support video at this time.
  • Visibility is a factor as well. Stage channels appear at the top of the channel list when you start an event. They can also have a topic, explaining what the event is about. Because of these features, stage channels may attract more attention and may get more of your members to notice that an event is taking place in the server.
  • Instead of relying on fiddling with permissions, Stage channels have built in features for allowing the audience to request to speak. Though this is technically also possible in voice channels with some clever permission tricks, having it built into the channel makes the flow of approving and denying requests to speak a lot smoother, if that’s what is right for your event.

While this guide is not an exhaustive list of all the things you might want to take into account when choosing between a Stage channel and a voice channel, we hope you can use it as a great starting point. The best way to find out what works for your server is to try different things out and evaluate how you can tailor your event’s format to your server’s needs. Both Stage channels and voice channels provide a plethora of customization options that can accommodate any type of event or space to hangout in your Discord server.
